Windows 8.1 Repair Options

The Windows 8 recovery disk or USB is a tool used to perform system functions and repairs, generally when windows itself does not boot, or is critially broken. Below are some general instructions on how to fix these issues. Also, there are many pages that show how to create one of these drives, and you can do so on another windows 8 machine if yours happens to have an issue.

Repair Boot Sector

The boot sector is a common element to fail with Windows and it will cause your computer to not be able to boot into windows. This section is sort of like the intermediate between the the bios and motherboard, to the actual part of the hard drive that contains Windows. To fix it you can perform a Startup Repair with the Windows recovery disk or USB.

  • Insert USB into the desired computers. Most computers will detect this and boot directly too it. If not, you may need to change your boot device.
  • The disk will look like it is booting into the Windows 8 installed on your computer, but it is in fact a very small version of windows with repair options
  • First you will be asked to choose your keyboard
  • When faced with some options choose “Troubleshoot”
  • Choose “advanced Options”
  • Choose “Startup Repairs”
  • This will automatically try to fix the boot sector issue. It may take a few minutes. Once done it will automatically reboot. When your Bios screen comes up (example “Panisonic”) you should then remove the USB drive or it will boot back into the recovery page.

If this does not solve your boot disk issue, then you may need to do other things to fix your computer.
