True Crypt

Truecrypt is a very good encryption program to keep files password protected. There is a lot of information out there. Please note that as of aproximatly May 2014, the creators of truecrypt shut down their website and are claiming that people do not use it. This is not because it is unreliable, but rather because they are trying to have it officially auditted. We can all still use Truecrypt and it is still very safe. No vulnerabilities or backdoors have been discovered and eventually it will most likely be rereleased. For now you can download it here:

And here are some basic Instructions:

  • Open truecrypt (icon will then be in taskbar)
  • choose drive letter to mount it to (or keep default)
  • Choose: “Select file”
  • Navigate to your Truecrypt file
  • Click OK
  • Click Mount
  • To open, Double click on drive from true crypt or
  • Go to my computer or an Explorer Window and go to drive you chose to mount it to
  • you can now work with that file as a folder
  • when finished, be sure all files in drive are saved and closed.
  • Go to truecrypt icon in taskbar and double click it or maximize it from the tray
  • click Dismount all
  • You can now close Truecrypt
