There are several ways to run check disk but here is one common way how to do it. NOTE when the check disk operation is running during start up, it can take a long time (hours) depending on your system. Please allow for time when your computer will NOT be needed to be in use. You can run it at night or before going to work.

  1. Click Windows Icon (start)
  2. Click “Computer” which is usually on the right side of the start panel. A new explorer window will open showing you all your drives (C,D, CD/DVD drives, etc)
  3. Right click on C drive
  4. Click on properties. A new window will open with tabs at the top
  5. Go to “Tools” Tab
  6. At the top section titled “Error-checking,” Click “Check Now” A new window will open.
  7. For Check disk options Check these two option ON:
  8. Check on: “Automatically fix file system errors”
  9. Check on: “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors”
  10. Click “Start” A new window will open telling you that it can not check the disk while in use so you need to:
  11. Click “Schedule disk check” This window will open
  12. Click “OK” on the Local disk properties window
  13. You will need to restart the computer. Once yu restart the check will run before windows is loaded. Remember that it can take a long time and the computer can not be used during this scan.
